VMworld 2018 Q&A: NanoVMs Will Showcase Real Unikernels Running Real-World Software in Tiny VMs with No Traditional OS

VMblog:  As a VMworld 2018 sponsor, how can people find you at the event?

NanoVMs:  We'll be in the New Innovator Pavilion - 1074 and we'll be kiosk S. We'll have the entire team there ready to show you what virtualization really can do.

We had a very successful exhibition at the recent RSA event, and we hope to have similar great conversations with VMworld attendees.

VMblog:  Can you give readers a few reasons why your product or service is considered unique? 

NanoVMs:  NanoVMs can produce incredibly tiny vms - 10-20mb large. The reason they are so small is that they contain only a single application. This eliminates a lot of remote code execution attacks out of the gate by design but we also get a huge performance boost from running one app per vm.

VMblog:  Why should a VMworld attendee add you to their MUST SEE list?

NanoVMs:  We can provision thousands of VMs on a single server and have completely reinvented how you can deploy software in a secure manner.

VMblog:  Can you give VMblog readers a sneak peek as to what you will be showing off at your booth this year?  What should attendees expect to see and hear at your booth?

NanoVMs:  We will be showing real Unikernels running real world software in VMs as small as 5-10mb with no traditional operating system such as Linux or Windows.

VMblog:  How does your company and product fit within the VMware ecosystem?

NanoVMs:  Our company might look like a security company at times considering all the security benefits unikernels bring, however, we are at the core a software infrastructure company. Our software can provision specialized virtual machines known as unikernels that run on any existing hypervisor. These vms are incredibly tiny and don't contain a traditional operating system.

VMblog:  And what about the Cloud?  Does your solution work with cloud computing?

NanoVMs:  Absolutely. NanoVMs can easily slide into your existing on-premises cloud infrastructure or you can run it in the cloud as a managed service. This includes compute, networking, storage and more.

Unikernels fit in perfectly well with existing on premises cloud installations and managed unikernel solutions. Whether your organization uses VMware ESX, XEN, KVM, or no hypervisor the NanoVMs unikernel platform can transparently slide in well. OpenStack and other private Infrastructure as a Service offerings work well with NanoVMs too.

VMblog:  Is this your first VMworld event as a sponsor?

VMblog:  What do you think we need to do collectively as an ecosystem to strengthen the industry?

NanoVMs:  We need to realize that virtualization allows us to do things we couldn't do before on real machines. There's a whole slew of innovative technology that can be made. I think there is a renaissance coming for virtualization driven by security, cost and performance needs as more and more companies have to adopt ever increasingly amounts of software.
