PostgreSQL in Kubernetes: How EDB is Revolutionizing Cloud-Native Database Management - KubeCon EU 2025

Written by

Join David Marshall and Brian Ducharme from VMblog as they interview Gabriele Bartolini, VP, Chief Architect, Kubernetes at EnterpriseDB (EDB), ahead of KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2025 in London. In this insightful conversation, Gabriele shares how EDB is bridging the gap between PostgreSQL and Kubernetes with their innovative solutions. As a leading company in PostgreSQL development, EDB has been contributing to the open-source project for over 15 years, accounting for approximately 30% of the PostgreSQL codebase. Their focus has expanded to include EDB Postgres AI, an enterprise-ready platform supporting transactional, analytical, and AI workloads across hybrid environments.

Key Highlights:

  • CloudNativePG: EDB's Kubernetes operator for PostgreSQL that recently became a CNCF Sandbox project
  • How EDB is solving the challenges of running stateful workloads in Kubernetes
  • Real-world success stories from IBM Cloud Pack and KRTM
  • Innovative features like declarative demotion and promotion for business continuity
  • Live demonstration of CloudNativePG's automated failover capabilities

Gabriele discusses how PostgreSQL has become the most used database in the world and explains EDB's mission to make it the default strategic data store for organizations supporting AI and advanced analytics. He also addresses the importance of achieving "cloud neutrality" by breaking down silos between operational, transactional, and analytical systems.According to recent reports from the Data on Kubernetes Community, databases are now the #1 workload in Kubernetes, followed by AI and machine learning applications. EDB's CloudNativePG offers a fully declarative approach to PostgreSQL management in Kubernetes, enabling organizations to achieve higher automation, security, and observability. To learn more about EnterpriseDB and their solutions, visit their website at https://www.enterprisedb.com, check out their blog, subscribe to their engineering newsletter, or explore the CloudNativePG project website.

David Marshall has been involved in the technology industry for over 19 years, and he's been working with virtualization software since 1999. He was able to become an industry expert in virtualization by becoming a pioneer in that field - one of the few people in the industry allowed to work with Alpha stage server virtualization software from industry leaders: VMware (ESX Server), Connectix and Microsoft (Virtual Server).

Through the years, he has invented, marketed and helped launch a number of successful virtualization software companies and products. David holds a BS degree in Finance, an Information Technology Certification, and a number of vendor certifications from Microsoft, CompTia and others. He's also co-authored two published books: "VMware ESX Essentials in the Virtual Data Center" and "Advanced Server Virtualization: VMware and Microsoft Platforms in the Virtual Data Center" and acted as technical editor for two popular Virtualization "For Dummies" books. With his remaining spare time, David founded and operates one of the oldest independent virtualization news blogs, VMblog.com. And co-founded CloudCow.com, a publication dedicated to Cloud Computing. Starting in 2009 and continuing all the way to 2016, David has been honored with the vExpert distinction by VMware for his virtualization evangelism.
