David Marshall

David Marshall

David Marshall has been involved in the technology industry for over 19 years, and he's been working with virtualization software since 1999. He was able to become an industry expert in virtualization by becoming a pioneer in that field - one of the few people in the industry allowed to work with Alpha stage server virtualization software from industry leaders: VMware (ESX Server), Connectix and Microsoft (Virtual Server).

Through the years, he has invented, marketed and helped launch a number of successful virtualization software companies and products. David holds a BS degree in Finance, an Information Technology Certification, and a number of vendor certifications from Microsoft, CompTia and others. He's also co-authored two published books: "VMware ESX Essentials in the Virtual Data Center" and "Advanced Server Virtualization: VMware and Microsoft Platforms in the Virtual Data Center" and acted as technical editor for two popular Virtualization "For Dummies" books. With his remaining spare time, David founded and operates one of the oldest independent virtualization news blogs, VMblog.com. And co-founded CloudCow.com, a publication dedicated to Cloud Computing. Starting in 2009 and continuing all the way to 2016, David has been honored with the vExpert distinction by VMware for his virtualization evangelism.

The world's largest virtualization event, VMworld, is right around the corner, taking place August 26th-30th, 2018 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Convention Center.  The event is always jam packed with incredible information coming out of the keynote presentations, from the large number of breakout sessions, to the expo hall which is filled with awesome vendors and solution experts from around the world.  And we can't forget about the fan favorite -- the VMworld Hands-On Labs.

To find out more ahead of the show, I reached out to the folks at VMware.

Are you attending VMworld 2018 in Las Vegas, NV?  If so, I invite you to add Vembu Technologies to your MUST SEE list of vendors.

With so many vendors exhibiting at VMworld, how do you know which booths to visit and who to get on your busy schedule?  One of the companies on VMblog's list these last few years has been Vembu Technologies.  For some time now, I've had the pleasure of closely following and working with the team at Vembu Technologies as their product has grown and matured.  And next month, I look forward to meeting with them face-to-face once again at VMworld to find out what's new and see their backup, recovery, and replication solution up close and in action.

Are you attending VMworld 2018 in Las Vegas, NV?  If so, I invite you to add Liquidware to your MUST SEE list of vendors.

With so many vendors exhibiting at VMworld, how do you know which booths to visit and who to get on your busy schedule?  One of the companies on VMblog's list each year is Liquidware.  I've been following them since the beginning, and I always leave impressed with the technologies they introduce in the EUC space.  Always on the move, watch this recent video interview we did with Kevin Cooke on the update of Stratusphere UX and SpotCheck.  At VMworld, you won't want to miss what they are doing with ProfileUnity and FlexApp, so make sure you visit their booth.

Key Tips for Surviving and Thriving at VMworld 2018

In only a few short weeks from now, 20k+ virtualization and cloud users will embark on their annual pilgrimage to what has become known as a reunion of friends and fellow virtualization geeks, an event also called VMworld.

VMworld US 2018 begins on Aug. 26th, 2018 and continues through August 30th.  The event will feature hundreds of unique breakout sessions from VMware and its community of partners, customers and industry experts; and the expo hall will be packed by more than 150 vendor sponsors and exhibitors.

As the show is nearly upon us, VMblog would like to send out its "survival guide" for those first time attendees or those individuals who might just want a refresher on some of what's to come.  Here are a few tips and tricks to help make your VMworld 2018 event a little bit more successful or enjoyable.

Let's begin!

Are you attending VMworld 2018 in Las Vegas, NV?  If so, I invite you to add NanoVMs to your MUST SEE list of vendors.

With so many vendors exhibiting at VMworld, how do you know which booths to visit and who to get on your busy schedule?  One of the companies on VMblog's MUST SEE list this year is a new comer to the show, a company called NanoVMs.  They have something extremely interesting and worthwhile to check out, a type of container called unikernels.  This is a specialized, very lightweight form of virtualization with some key benefits and features that you are going to want to learn more about... trust me!

VMworld 2018 is a few weeks away, taking place August 26th-30th, 2018 in Las Vegas, NV at the Mandalay Bay.  And once again, VMware and the show sponsors are really bringing the party to VMworld.

VMworld is more than just breakout sessions and keynotes.  The social and networking side of the event is just as huge!  And when in Las Vegas, the party scene associated with VMworld takes a back seat to nobody.  VMworldattendees have become accustomed to having a good time after the sessions have ended.  And so far, things are starting to take shape on the front, as the opportunities from various vendors are making their way to reality.

NOTE: Most events will require you to take some type of signup action in order to attend.  Yes, even if the event is free.  They need to do that in order to take a proper head count or know when to shut things down if the list grows too big.  These things are generally first come, first served.  So if you are interested, I suggest you sign up if you are available before it is too late.

If I'm missing an event, contact me or send me a Tweet (@vmblog) and I'll get it added.

** LAST UPDATED 07/03/2018 **

Did you hear the news?  After months of submissions and voting, VMware has narrowed down the list and created the content catalog for the upcoming VMworld US 2018 event.

Are you attending the event this year?  If so, this is your chance to start planning.  The content catalog contains a complete listing of all the sessions, including abstracts, speaker information, and (when available) details on session times and locations.  There are 600+ breakout sessions, panels, labs, quick talks and group discussions, and this is your opportunity to map out your conference experience to maximize your learning!

Are you attending DockerCon 2018?  If so, I invite you to add NeuVector to your MUST SEE list of vendors.

DockerCon 2018 is quickly approaching, June 12-15, and takes place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.  One of the vendors exhibiting this year is NeuVector, and you are definitely going to want to visit them at their booth to learn more!  NeuVector is the leader in Kubernetes security and delivers the first and only multi-vector container firewall.  Get them on your must see list at the show.

Docker recently announced the agenda for DockerCon 2018, scheduled for June 12-15, 2018 at Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco, Calif. DockerCon is expected to draw more than 6,000 IT leaders, developers, architects and sysadmins from all over the world and will feature more than 120 sessions from Docker, its enterprise customers as well as users and partners across the ecosystem. Attendees will have the option to attend sessions tailored to where they are in their containerization journey, whether it is an introductory tutorial on Docker or a Black Belt session for advanced Docker users.

It's hard to believe that next week, thousands of people will make their way to the city of Chicago to discuss the latest in data center modernization using virtualization, storage and cloud technologies.  The event that's bringing everyone together is called VeeamON.

There's a new expectation of data today. In a world where data is pouring in from every click, transaction and Internet of Things (IoT) device, it's not enough to collect, store and protect it all. Today's business demands data that is active, intelligent and Always-On.

Hyper-Availability is a new state of intelligence, where data delivers actionable insights that fuel increased productivity and faster innovation, while delivering better customer experiences that improve how we live and work.

VeeamON officially kicks off to the public May 14th and ends on May 16th.  To find out more about the event, I spoke with Veeam ahead of the show.
